The psychology of resolutions are interesting, because it seems ritualistic to formulate a plan at the beginning of every year, only to find a month or two down the road that they have only been partially implemented or that they have been fully implemented, but by March or April, abandoned.

The best approach to resolutions is just to keep them simple, then abide by them all year-round, because your body is a long-term investment and by approaching it that way, you will get the best results. The only way to really modify behavior and habits is to one-by-one, replace old, unhealthy habits with new, healthier habits. It is simple.

As we know, the body comes as a whole package, so why not treat it holistically.

Here are the best four things we can do to make a difference, every day. Mind you, I am in the dental industry, so I am going to mention oral health and hygiene, but it really does matter. So here it goes:

Eat Healthy: Cut down on sugars and starches, high-fructose corn syrup, soft drinks and foods that are generally unhealthy and YOU WILL SEE A BIG DIFFERENCE. This alone can help obesity, weight issues, diabetes and your teeth.

Hydrate: Drink a lot of water, daily, and your body will be happier. Your joints, tissues and organs will perform much better and this also helps dry mouth conditions that cause oral health issues.

Activity: Do what you enjoy, walk, hike, jog, bike, play tennis, go to the gym, lift weights, stretch - whatever you can do, but be active at least three times a week for 20 minutes. A lot of times it helps to do this with a partner or friend. The added support makes it easier and more social.

Mind Your Mouth: Your mouth is the gateway to your body, so think about what you put in it and how you treat it. Brush, floss, rinse and repeat. And of course, visit your dentist and hygienist twice a year.

There, that wasn't so hard was it? All of these items are vitally important to your health. If you just do these four things on a routine basis, you may not need resolutions at all.

On that note, Happy New Year from American Dental Plan. We wish you success with your resolutions and your life, all-year-round. Enjoy.

Use Caution During the Holidays and Festivities

Recently, Dr. Oz discussed the number of heart attacks and emergencies during the holidays due to rich foods, excess, unhealthy eating habits and stress. All of these things can contribute to unfortunate outcomes during festivities with family and friends. Many people disregard symptoms and their first instinct is to wait to address their ailments, until after the holidays. This is not recommended, especially if you are in significant pain. Pain is the body's response to alert you that there is a problem. For example, many people who think they have indigestion may actually be experiencing heart problems that need to be addressed, immediately. Do not take your pain too lightly.

The same applies to oral pain. The holidays are a time to indulge. It is hard to turn down the home-baked goods, sweets, candy, fudge, cookies, fruit cakes and beverages that contain a lot of sugar. Most likely, your teeth will be under attack more than usual during the season, because of the foods we eat. So, make sure to brush, floss and drink a lot of water to neutralize the acids that are going to war on your teeth and gums.

If you should develop a serious tooth ache or experience some other painful oral issue, then call your dentist office to be seen. Do not wait, because more than likely, it will only get worse.

Even during the holidays, your dental office should have a dentist on call to listen to your symptoms, prescribe something if necessary, and help expedite your oral emergency.

Have a happy and safe holiday season and treat your teeth with tender-loving care for best outcomes.

National Association of Dental Plans Reveal: Positive Correlation Between Affordable Dental Care and Well Being

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> The 28% rated their oral health as very good to excellent.

According to the NADP survey: people without dental benefit plans were 2.5 times less likely to visit the dentist than those consumers who did have access to coverage of some sort. Aside from being targeted for teasing – over-crowded teeth also trap food and make them harder to clean every day and during hygienist visits.

I never met a person with an over-bit or an under-bite who did not want to correct the problem. Not only was it aesthetically uncomfortable, it can make for some physical discomforts as well or lead to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or TMJ syndrome.

Back in my days of youth, if you wanted to straighten out the oral problems, you had to have your cranium confined in captivity by a contraption for a decent part of your teen years. If you were lucky, your entire mouth was just bound and wired by metal brackets and rubber bands caging your chompers, and making eating a major event during a hunger-crazed growth spurt. Ah yes, the joys of head-gear and being called “brace-face” are not as common these days.

Traditional braces still exist, and they are widely used for certain cases, but there are significant new advances and the industry that evolved and streamlined smile artistry.

I have been involved with dentistry for 20 years and I am amazed at how it has been transformed and modernized.

Contemporary technologies deliver precise aesthetic results allowing for detailed, customized design. Dentists and orthodontists can now utilize innovative and sophisticated 3D imaging and CT scanning, hardware devices, software diagnostics, computers, tools and appliances at their disposal, making braces more attractive, comfortable and convenient for teens and adults who need and desire smile symmetry.

Now patients can maximize their results in a shorter time and dentists can devise a more comprehensive treatment plan using the latest techniques and solutions, such as: Invisalign® - removable and virtually invisible braces that are a clear alternative to metal braces and ClearCorrect™ another option that allows dentists or orthodontists to straighten and align teeth using a series of clear, custom, removable aligners. The severity of your dental situation, bone structure and alignment will dictate the orthodontic treatment and use of metal braces or clear braces, but at least there are more options – and varying price tags.

Personally, I had the old-fashioned version of braces as an adolescent - and a newer, invisible version as an adult, and I can honestly say advanced technology solidified my smile more precisely, and permanently.

For many, the investment can be an issue, which is understandable. Most braces cost between five and eight thousand dollars, depending on the type of treatment. With some of the newer options, like Invisalign and ClearCorrect, it can cost as little as $2500. In today’s economy, that is like buying a used car, and some people may suffer from sticker shock, but the outcome will make all of the difference in the world.

American Dental Plan allows members to take advantage of the many great benefits and 20% - 40% savings on all their dental needs, including orthodontics. If you do not have insurance and you do need a treatment plan, call 602-265-6677 or enroll online.

Facts About Fluoride

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> Interestingly, many of us learn about how fluoride can help promote healthier teeth, before we ever take a chemistry class. From a young age, when we first visit the dentist, we are directed to brush with toothpaste containing fluoride and to rinse with mouthwash containing it as well. Beyond that, we just do as we are told, but here are some other facts that may interest you.

Fluoride is a compound containing the natural element, fluorine, which has many uses unrelated to oral hygeine. In chemistry, this compound is symbolized by the letter “F” in the periodic table.

Many dental products contain small amounts of fluoride as a preventative ingredient to ward off tooth decay. Fluoride actually protects the teeth to prevent the loss of important minerals and strengthens enamel. This occurs as a result of remineralisation. Without this mineral compound, teeth can become weak and develop decay and cavities. Fluoride also fights against acid attacks, which are common due to diet and foods that are high in acid and sugar. The presence of fluoride actually discourages acidic reactions, bacteria build up and agents that break down the healthy protective surface of the teeth. Fluoride when used in the right amount and in conjunction with a healthy diet and proper oral hygiene, equal better teeth.

Fluoride Sources – Where Is It Present?

Fluoride is not naturally present in water, however, many places add fluoride to public water supplies, which can be sufficient enough to give people a head start on healthier teeth. So if you are in a community that fluoridates their water supply, and if you drink tap water and use it to brush your teeth, chances are your teeth may be stronger and healthier. Some research indicates that fluoridation of public water systems can decrease cavities and decay by more than 50 percent.

Fluoride is also an active ingredient in many products, including toothpaste, mouthwash, treatments, varnishes and gels, sold over the counter and used in dental offices.

Recommended Doses of Fluoride

From an early age, children should use fluoridated toothpaste to brush twice a day. The recommended times to brush are after breakfast and before bedtime. The benefits of brushing increase when people brush twice a day, rather than once a day. Fluoride toothpaste is meant only to brush and not to be ingested.

Now, many dentist offices offer topical fluoride treatments as a preventative routine for children and young adults, to help protect the enamel and keep cavities from forming. These treatments are normally applied after six-month cleanings in the form of a gel or varnish that is administered and left on the teeth for a few minutes before rinsing. Ask your dentist if he or she offers fluoride treatments and the additional cost. This added measure may help protect your children’s teeth and lower future dental bills.

There is a downside to fluoride use. If one uses too much fluoride it can have a negative impact on the teeth, which causes a condition called fluorosis.

How Much is Too Much

Excessive fluoride use damages the enamel and forming cells, causing fluorosis. This condition is irreversible once the damage is done. Contrary to remineralisation with the use of fluoride, the opposite from too much fluoride is mineralization, a disorder which is from too much fluoride and over-mineralisation, leading to porosity and a permanent break down of the enamel’s matrix. This can be mostly true for children if their fluoride intake is not monitored. They are at greater risk for not rinsing, swallowing or ingesting fluoride or using too much toothpaste or mouthwash.

Ask your dentist about recommended fluoride use and treatments. In addition, if you feel there is a chance you or a family member may have fluorosis, ask about the available solutions for that condition.

Dry Mouth May Be Your Medications, Not Dehydration

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> This not only benefits their health, but it benefits our wallets and purses when we take them to the dentist.

In our last post, we pointed out the “Modern Warfare” that takes place in our mouths, daily. Plaque is a big factor, but we also have to worry about the dreaded “acid attacks” caused by food and beverages that contain a lot of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. When these two worlds collide, and when plaque caused from bacteria meets the sugary content from foods, acid forms and attacks the teeth for 20 minutes or more, after it forms.

Over time, this process takes a toll on teeth and forms decay. Decay is the number one reason for most dental issues in young children, which is due to poor eating habits and bad dental hygiene. It starts when we are young and will continue until we change these habits. The natural wear on our teeth is hard enough to ward off with brushing and flossing, but bad diet is a big contributing factor for children and young adults ages 4-18.

So many of the things we eat and drink contain high levels of sugar, like: candy, desserts, cookies, energy drinks, sodas and soft-drinks, and even some items that are considered healthier, such as: juice and yogurt.

Unfortunately, many of the yummy snacks and drinks that our kids love to eat can cause early tooth decay.

As parents, we too may not have the healthiest eating habits. Sometimes, we may purchase grocery items that are not so good for us. Most kitchen cabinets, pantries and refrigerators are stocked with more sugary foods than necessary. When they are readily available, no doubt, they will be consumed by hungry people in a hurry. I

n addition, we may not have the time to prepare balanced meals, so our families may substitute with fast food and snacks that are less nutritious. And let’s face it, life is busy. We cannot always be there to monitor what our kids are eating and if they are brushing and flossing as often as they should.

Here is a great program for you to review featuring Arizona nutrition standards and guidelines, so you know what is being instituted to help schools and families: http://www.healthologyaz.com/health-components/nutrition-services.

The best way to help your kids understand the value of their health is to get them engaged. It is your “Call of Duty” to fight off the harmful bacteria and sticky plaque that attack your teeth and gums, day-in and day-out.

Simply stated, plaque is the enemy. It is a viscous threat to your tooth enamel and gums. If plaque builds up, and gets through the front line, it wears down the enamel and causes inflammation and infection of the gums. Think of yourself as the defender, and you have the armor. The only way to win the war is by brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist.

If you do not act as the protagonist on behalf of your oral health, there are serious consequences.

There is a growing body of research in the medical journals that reveal a true antagonist to your health – plaque, which can lead to major health issues.

Plaque and poor oral hygiene are the roots of many evils to your body. Studies and research find that bacteria and inflammation in your mouth can be associated with other problems, including:

• Periodontal disease
• Heart attack
• Diabetes
• Dementia
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Premature birth

Plaque constantly forms on your teeth, gum-line and dental work. Food and beverages containing a lot of starch and sugars release acids that attack enamel and gum tissue. Over time, without proper care, brushing and flossing, plaque causes decay and gets into the bloodstream of the body, causing greater harm to organs and your health.

Look for the beginning signs, like bad breath, gingivitis, tooth sensitivity, cavities, inflammation, and tender and swollen gums that bleed.

Inflammation is also a common denominator. If it exists in your mouth and around your gums, then it is more than likely leading to inflammation in other areas.

You are the first responder to your own health. It is important to fight the battle with good hygiene, brushing and flossing. Your dentist can only respond if you take the time to visit every six months for routine examinations.

American Dental Plan is here to help you fight that war, and make dental care more affordable, because we care about you and your health.

Summertime Advice: Water is the Best Source of Hydration for Dental Health

You know the song that was written for the graduating class of 1999 called “Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” by Baz Luhrmann. It became so popular because it is true. Especially in Arizona, wearing sunscreen should be a part of our daily regime. Even more important, as the sun becomes more intense and the temperature rises, is hydration. I am trying to come up with the lyrics for a song right now, “H20 Hydrate: Drink More Water.”

This is particularly relevant when you understand the correlations between hydration and health, including oral health.

Sports and mind-blowing energy drinks, in addition to frothy, frozen coffee drinks with whipped cream and toppings have become a line-forming trend with youth and adults. Seriously, we should all have stock in the companies that keep us fueled and energized. I too enjoy an occasional sports beverage, soda or caffeinated beverage, but I limit my intake, because they can be very high in sugar, and they tend to be bad influences on teeth and gums. This has become increasingly evident to dentist and hygienists, and I hear about the negative consequences of these tasty beverages.

“According to a study from the University of Iowa, sports drinks can be more corrosive to teeth than colas and energy drinks. Researchers found that the high sugar content and acids in sports drinks can damage tooth enamel and the roots of teeth. With weakened enamel, the teeth are more susceptible to bacteria that can sneak into the cracks and crevices in the teeth. Sugar can intensify the situation and encourage the bacterial growth.”

True, we all need to stay hydrated during summer months, and sports events. Hydration prevents dry-mouth and promotes saliva production, which protects the teeth by neutralizing and rinsing away acids and debris. But sports drinks and sugary beverages should be minimized. The best way to quench your thirst and hydrate in the summer and during athletic events is to drink water, the good old-fashioned beverage from mother earth.

Dentists already have their work cut out for them trying to promote best practices to children, teens and adults when it comes to managing our mouths. Mass consumption of readily available convenience stores, soft drinks, junk foods and trendy beverages make their job more difficult and put your dental health at risk.
The best defense for dehydration during summer and during play is hydration, which is healthy for every part of your body.

You can educate and send a healthier message to your kids and teens by reminding them to replace sports drinks, soft drinks and energy drinks with more water. Communicate, write notes and send texts to remind them to stay healthy and drink H20. Of course they can still drink those beverages, but just cut down on them – and look at them as a reward.

Try it, your dentist and pocket book will smile, I assure you.
When I make a hit song, I will post it to my blog and let you know. But for now, the message is yours to share. H2O is the way to go!

The Discount Dental Deal that Keeps Giving, Year-Round

A new online marketing trend has gained popularity in the last year, featuring daily coupon deals for those who sign up to purchase 24 hour vouchers. It is wise to build good rapport with your healthcare providers, so that you can follow a recommended treatment plan for the healthiest outcomes, long-term.

4. Yes … and the Type of Dental Cleaning Depends on You.

“Why can't I just get my teeth cleaned?” Many people have asked this question, not realizing the complexities of various types of dental cleanings. When you present yourself at the dental office, the dentist, or hygienist, must first determine the amount of calculus and/or tartar that is present in the mouth. Based on this information, along with possibly performing a periodontal probe on each tooth, the correct type of cleaning can be diagnosed and performed.

The reason there are different types of teeth cleaning is because there are different types of people and different reasons why people may need more invasive cleanings.

Obviously, we are all unique, and our dental needs will depend on many factors. Aside from genetics, environment, tooth and bone structure and other physical reasons, the main reason there are different types of teeth cleaning really depends on us, for the most part.

In the world of dentistry, there seem to be three types of patients:
1. Those who are fanatics about brushing, flossing, getting cleanings, check-ups and having good hygiene and a great smile. This type schedules appointments for the year, and often purchases additional products like fluoride rinses and whiteners to ensure their pearly whites look fabulous.
2. Those who have a healthy, but intermittent routine of brushing, flossing, getting their cleanings and visiting the dentist. This type of person may wait an extra couple of months between appointments or only see the dentist once a year, instead of two.
3. Those who do not take their oral hygiene seriously at all. In fact, they ignore the importance of their teeth and gums, and forget that their mouth and teeth are the gateway to their health and body. These folks rarely brush or floss and they may only see the dentist in case of an emergency.

So, when you visit the dentist and/or hygienist, the type of teeth cleaning they recommend may depend on what type of patient you are and how you care for your teeth between visits.

Here is a list of the types or cleanings:

Superficial Cleaning and Polish:
This is the most common type of cleaning. It is a routine cleaning, which is necessary to remove surface stains and other debris only on tooth surface above the gum line. This type of cleaning is performed with an ultrasonic instrument or prophy jet.

Bi-Annual Normal Routine Cleaning:
This is necessary for regular dental maintenance, usually at six month intervals (sometimes three depending on whether you build tarter and plaque along the gum line quicker than others). This type of cleaning is performed using an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments on the entire tooth above the gum line and below to remove any tartar, plaque and mineral deposits. This type of cleaning is combined with superficial cleaning and polish of the tooth surface with a prophy jet.

Extensive "Debridement" Cleaning:
Again this type of cleaning is usually only necessary when an individual has not had his/her teeth cleaned in more than a year, or if there is heavy calculus/mineral deposits under the gum line fused to the tooth and roots. This type of cleaning is may require a longer appointment or two visits and is performed using an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments followed by superficial cleaning and polish.

Deep Scaling and Root Planing:
This type of cleaning is more invasive and may be more painful. It is necessary in moderate or advanced stages of gum disease when bone loss and pocketing occur and when mineral deposits have fused deeper down the root surface. This procedure may require a form of anesthesia for patient comfort and is performed in quadrants and will require one-quarter of the mouth to be done at a time. Followed by a normal cleaning and evaluation appointment 2-4 weeks after treatment, these periodontal maintenance visits will need to take place in three month intervals until normal tissue health is achieved.

Advanced Periodontal (Gum) Disease Requires a Specialist, a periodontist: Routine Periodontal Cleaning:
This type of cleaning is necessary for regular dental maintenance, usually in three to six month intervals, following a diagnosis of periodontal disease, where bone loss and gum tissue damage are extensive due to lack of care or other reasons. A periodontist will perform scale root planing to avoid tooth loss. This treatment is also necessary if the patient accumulates plaque and calculus far in excess of normal levels which must be removed for adequate oral health.

So there you have it, the gamut of teeth cleaning possibilities. This is just a friendly reminder that taking care of your teeth in gums should a healthy part of your daily routine. In addition, regular dental visits and check-ups are also very important to avoid the more invasive, painful appointments.

Once your teeth have been cleaned and returned to a "normal" state of hygiene, only then can the dentist perform a simple prophy cleaning.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://americandentalplan-az.blogspot.com/2011/03/are-there-different-types-of-teeth.html' title='Are There Different Types of Teeth Cleaning? Don’t Let Them Keep You Or Your Children From the Dentist!

Do you have fear of going to the dentist? It may rub off and impact how your kids feel about the dentist, too. Many adults and children despise the dental chair and have severe anxiety when faced with dental visits. Research suggests that this fear may be passed down from elders or adults who express fear of dentists and perhaps other emotional anxieties.

The recent research carried out at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden found that children with oral care management issues not only suffered more frequently from dental fears which correlated to parents with a similar approach to dental care. Many of the youngsters typically lived in financially struggling families.

The American Dental Association suggests that parents teach their children the importance of daily oral health care at early ages, including the need for bi- annual cleanings and dental checkups. Anyone who avoids the dentist may develop cavities, tooth decay and gum disease, which will only get worse and cause more dental issues, if not treated by a dentist.

In addition, the article suggested, “parents who are averse to the dentist's office may need to be better aware of how their own dental fears can negatively impact the long-term oral health of their children.”

Similarly, another story reveals how many kids fear going to the dentist, especially if they have a cavity, because of the intimidating sound of the drill. This can be a problem if the anxiety keeps a child in need of treatment from the dentist’s chair. Cavities do not heal, they just get worse, so to get to the root of the problem, before the decay leads to a root canal, the fears need to be eradicated, early on.

One way to help kids overcome the fear and eliminate aversions is to have them listen to music on their iPod or MP3 or you can download story on a mobile music device to cancel out the noise. In addition, “British researchers have just finished development of a device that eliminates the drill’s irritating sound. Plugged in like headphones into a MP3 player, the gadget produces inverted waves to target, then cancel out the unwanted sounds. If the drill sound’s frequency and amplitude change, the device removes it using adaptive filtering.”

According to the American Dental Association, children lost over 51 million hours of school due to dental illnesses in 2009. Routine dentist visits are essential for oral health and to avoid bigger issues and bills and more absences. Dentists monitor the development and growth of young teeth, create treatment plans, and diagnose and treat gum disease and cavities.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://americandentalplan-az.blogspot.com/2011/02/whos-afraid-of-big-bad-dentist-got.html' title='Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Dentist … Got Dental Fears? Unemployment and job losses have impacted millions. However, there is a way to prevent dental problems and recession-proof your mouth, which is a gateway to your body and other health issues.

It is as simple as brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing twice, daily. Taking proper care of your teeth and gums can save you and your family thousands of dollars, for the rest of your life – and prevent you from contracting other illnesses.

Dental and gum disease is linked to oral decay, cavities, abscesses, infections, heart disease, plaque build-up in your arteries, diabetes and many other bacterial-related issues. Safeguard your teeth and gums, and your pocketbook or wallet by following a few simple rules that will help you save money in the long-run.

Here is a list of recommendations for 2011:

• Eat healthier foods, like raw fruits and vegetables
• Kick the habit and quit smoking or using tobacco products, by doing this you protect gum tissues, avoid oral cancer and dental discoloration
• Drink more water and stay hydrated
• Lower alcohol intake, which leads to dry-mouth and cavities around the gum-line
• Brush and floss twice a day
• Avoid high-fructose corn syrup and sweetened, carbonated beverages

Follow these simple steps and save. In addition, many people who have dental insurance do not use it, so their insurance premiums are just being flushed down the toilet, year-after year.

American Dental Plan is a low-cost, effective benefit plan and dental network that works in your favor and is there when you need it most. An ADP membership can save you 40% on almost all of your dental services including: cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns and dentures, and orthodontics, no exclusions! There are no waiting periods or pre-existing exclusions, and you receive one exam each membership year, and 4 x-rays at no charge!

In economic downtimes, it makes sense and cents to put your money where your mouth is and follow a few steps to ensure you save your smile and spend less on coverage and dental visits.

“All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth”

Well, this would be for certain if they were missing. But more than likely, you have your two front teeth, and most - if not all of your teeth for that matter. Having been in the dental industry for my entire adult career, my job has always required me to educate people about the importance of dental care and oral hygiene.

Consider this blog entry my public service announcement or message.

This has been another tough year on people and their families in Arizona. Unemployment remains high and many people are still without jobs.

It used to be that mainly lower income families had more dental issues, because they could not afford dental coverage, which meant fewer trips to the dentist.

Now, many people, regardless of their social-economic backgrounds are experiencing tough times, and American Dental Plan would like to help. ADP has a gift that could benefit thousands.

American Dental Plan is willing to offer a free membership to any Arizona individual who has lost employment or employment benefits in 2010 (only a $10 administration fee is required). Tooth decay is the second most common health issue, falling just behind the common cold, which you may find surprising. Most Americans have their first cavity before the age of five. There are many reasons we develop cavities and gum issues, many of which are diet and lifestyle related, which is not surprising.

It is never too late and never early enough to harness control of your dental health. Here are six things you can do all-year-round to improve your dental health and prevent tooth and gum disease.

Brush and Floss Daily and Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year. You would be amazed how brushing and flossing keeps the cavities away and the dentists happy. So, let this serve as a reminder to brush and floss, every day. In addition, keep your calendar open twice a year for a routine, bi-annual check up and cleaning with your dentist. Semi-annual visits to the dentist are vital to maintaining good dental health. Teeth cleanings with a dental hygienist keep your smile bright, and check ups with your dentist are the best preventative measures. Do not wait until you feel pain to visit your dentist. No dental problem will disappear. As a matter of fact, it will only get worse.

Know the Difference Between Myth and Fact. Although diet, poor eating habits and too much sugar can increase your risk of cavities and decay, eating too many foods with high-fructose corn syrup and sugar are not the primary cause of cavities. The main cause is the pH balance in your mouth, which can be impacted by sugar. High acid levels and an acidic mouth lead to cavities, dental disease and bacterial growth. You can brush and floss all you like, but it is also important to neutralize pH balances in your mouth. Ask your dentist about treatments and products that promote healthy pH balance in the mouth and help minimize acid levels.

Food Balancing Act – Much on these Morsels. You can promote a healthier pH balance in your mouth by eating certain foods, like: onions, celery, cheese, wasabi, shitake mushrooms and other food items, because they fight the bad bacteria that causes cavities. They may not be the tastiest foods, but they will make your teeth want to smile.

Hydrate with H20. Your body naturally craves water, because we are comprised of mostly water. So pay attention to your thirst and drink more water to keep up the production of saliva, fight bacteria and hydrate your gums. Drinking water is different from many “hydrating” drinks that contain a lot of sugar. Green tea has a lot of healthy anti-oxidants that fight bacteria and benefit your teeth and gums, without staining.

The Benefits of Xylitol. There are benefits to eating, chewing or drinking products that contain Xylitol, which is a natural sweetener that’s found in plants and fruits. Xylitol adds a shield of protection against bacteria and acid, because it cannot be broken down by either. There are many smile-boosting benefits to Xylitol , because it protects teeth and does not allow bacteria to adhere to the surface of the teeth and create decay. Look for products that contain it and try to consume 6-11 grams per day in the form of select fruits, chewing gums, toothpastes, and mouthwashes.

Newsflash! Fatty Fish, Nuts May Prevent Gum Disease. Recent studies recently revealed that foods high in polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce risk for periodontitis. This new study released by WebMD suggests that eating foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as salmon and nuts, may help prevent gum disease or periodontitis. Periodontitis is a common type of gum disease in which the gum tissue separates from the teeth and allows bacteria to build up and leads to a condition that can lead to bone and tooth loss. Researchers found that people whose diets were rich in PUFAs were as much as 30% less likely to have gum disease than those who ate little or none of this type of fat.

So, check your dental health checklist and make sure you follow these six steps for healthier teeth and gums. American Dental Plan is here to make sure you and yours have something to smile about, 24/7.

Gums Play an Important Role in Your Health

We tend to place a lot of value on our smiles. Truth be told, the psychology behind dental visits and upkeep is more about the pearly whites than what holds them in place. Most people pay closer attention to taking care of their teeth than their gums, because their teeth are a gateway to their image. However, the gums play an important role in the health of your teeth, and your health, overall.

The American Dental Association recently released an article linking gum disease to Alzheimer’s disease. According to the article, this new study conducted by researchers at the NYU College of Dentistry found that gum disease may increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s the first long-term evidence that gum disease may increase the risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease in healthy individuals as well as in those who already are cognitively impaired.”

The study was led by NYU’s Dr. Angela Kamer, who collaborated with a team of researchers from Denmark, and expands on a 2008 study by Dr. Kamer which “found that subjects with Alzheimer’s disease had a significantly higher level of antibodies and inflammatory molecules associated with periodontal disease in their plasma compared to healthy people.” You can read the article here.

There are many health risks associated with oral issues, tooth decay and gum disease. The best preventative medicine is to keep up with your dental care, flossing, and visits to the dentist office for bi-annual examinations and cleanings.

If affordability is an issue, then American Dental Plan is an answer to keep you and your smile, healthy and happy.

Healthy Tips to Keep the Cold and Flu Season from Getting the Best of You

As a dental benefits provider, our focus is on oral hygiene and how you can achieve healthier outcomes by practicing better dental and oral habits. People always seem amazed at how their oral care factors into their overall health. This is especially true during cold and flu season. Our mouths are huge purveyors of contagious diseases, germs, and viral and bacterial infections.

Whether you do or do not get an influenza vaccine this year, you can still help ward off germs, viruses and bacteria and the flu by practicing and endorsing a few simple practices in your home and around the office.

Sniffling, sneezing, coughs and fevers are big signs of viral and bacterial infection. Wherever these symptoms exist, germs are present. The healthiest response to the coughing, sneezing, sniffling and signs of a fever are to: avoid close contact with others, wash your hands often, especially after coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue to, maintain good oral hygiene, and brush your teeth more often to keep your mouth clean.

In addition, there are other factors that can help you avoid contracting or spreading germs and infection, like:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing your teeth.
• Protect your toothbrush an keep it away from others and off common surfaces.
• Rinse your toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide, weekly, then rinse and air dry before use.
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, since the bacteria most harmful will die when exposed to oxygen.
• Store your toothbrush in an upright position.
• Replace your toothbrush more often, like every 1-2 months, depending on whether bristles appear worn or you've if you have had a cold or flu to prevent possible re-infection.
• Clean the toothbrush cover or container to kill harmful bacteria and the spread of infection that reside in the bristles.

Here are some things to avoid:

• Do not share your toothbrush, because the exchange of saliva and oral fluids from can increase the risk for infections.
• Be aware of things that can lead to cross-contamination.
• Do not use community toothbrush holders. If you do, then rinse your brushes with hot water and make sure the toothbrushes do not come in contact with one another.
• When you brush, do not allow the toothbrush to touch the toothpaste tube and spread germs to the next user.

Every year the health risks and viruses tend to get worse, not better. You can make a big difference in your general health by taking care of your oral health, first.
Keep these tips in mind and practice them to avoid the spread of infection, influenza and bacteria.

Our team at American Dental Plan cares about you and your health. If this were not the case, then teeth whitening agents and teeth whitening procedures would not be such a hot selling item in drug stores and dentists offices.

In this article, The Dental Tribune reveals a study conducted by Harvard University. It revealed that “eating fruit daily is the best way to whiten teeth.”

The three-month clinical study determined that “strawberries, orange peels, and lemon juice are the most effective teeth whiteners in the world. Strawberries can be made into a puree and smothered on the teeth.”

Apparently, strawberries contain a natural enzyme that removes tooth stains, according to TeethWhitener.net. Orange peels can be used to remove tooth stains, just by rubbing the inside of a peel against tooth surfaces.

In addition, the study disclosed that a little lemon juice can go a long way if you take a little lemon juice and salt with warm water, and rinse your mouth out, the combination will remove stains from coffee, tea, red wine and other teeth staining items.

Baking soda can also do wonders, which is why it is now an active ingredient in toothpaste. Peroxide is another whitening agent. Strawberries, lemons, baking soda, peroxide and various concoctions may not taste great, but they are effective whiteners.

As the article states, “it is best to not drink coffee, tea, colas or red wine, which are all known to stain teeth and cause some decay of the enamel. Apples and potatoes can cause discoloration, but they also tend to clean off the teeth. Mouth washing is important after eating apples.”

At American Dental Plan, our “Aim” is to help improve your oral health and smile.
It is best to ask your dentist about any of these agents and the best way to use them. Obviously, too much of any of these items may cause a break-down in the enamel if used in excess. In addition, every one has different shades of teeth. Some teeth are naturally more yellow or darker. It is best to consult with a dentist to discuss a whitening plan, aside from any natural approaches.

Finally, remember that a little prevention can go a long way. Going to the dentist once or twice a year for a cleaning and checkup is strongly suggested.

2010 Most Popular Cosmetic Dentistry Trends

As a provider of dental care programs, we like to keep informed of upcoming trends in the industry. As the medical industry becomes more bogged down with the limitations and legalities that impact their level of care, we the people have access to our greatest allies – the Internet and software developers – the gateways to the latest health information.

The fastest way to access information regarding your dental health is to use the world-wide-web. You can search online, anytime, 24/7 to find the answers you need, especially if it is after hours and you cannot reach your dentist or physician.

As the new healthcare reform initiatives are instituted, various healthcare entities are also taking matters into their own hands to develop user-friendly programs to keep individuals and patients informed. Dentists Management Corporation (DMC) instituted the Dental Optimizer™, a free dental health application offered online to help users learn about:

• the most effective oral treatments available
• the costs for treatments and learn how to reduce dental care costs
• the best ways to prevent dental disease and tooth decay

There are new tools and applications available, like Microsoft HealthVault to help health organizations and individuals learn healthy lifestyle habits and obtain and store personal and family health information.

About Microsoft Health Vault

Microsoft HealthVault is a personal health application platform designed to put consumers in control of their health information. HealthVault provides a security-enhanced foundation on which a broad ecosystem of providers can build innovative health and wellness solutions such as personal health records, disease management, fitness, weight loss and other web applications.

The Dental Optimizer™ uses the Microsoft HealthVault application to enhance their offerings for patients and users.

A recent Medical News Today article announced that the Dental Optimizer™ also launched “a pharmacy module that allows patients to find out if the medications they are taking may impact their oral health. In addition to learning about the side effects of their medications, users can access recommendations from dentists and pharmacists aimed at helping them alleviate potential oral health issues.”

American Dental Plan (ADP) offers affordable network plans to dramatically reduce the costs of dental optical, chiropractic and alternative care - in addition to discount pharmacy benefits. At ADP, we are always looking for healthy news to post to our blog.

American Dental Plan, Arizona’s oldest and most credible voluntary dental network and discount plan offers great savings and affordable plans for individuals and their families. When it comes to reform debates, the main question that comes to the minds of the masses is “what’s in it for me?”

That’s a good question for you, me and everybody, because it impacts every person who has teeth.

According to an article posted on March 24, 2010 at www.WorlDental.org, titled, How Dental Care Will Be Changed by Health care Reform, health reform may bring some big changes in the arena of dental care due to an expansion of coverage for individuals in need once health reform is initiated. In addition, new reform will have a lasting effect on the field of dentistry and the type of dental care that people will receive, especially children.

Hopefully, more funding will be available to help educate the public about adequate oral hygiene, preventative measures, and proper care to optimize dental health. That is where dental problems begin – and where they can be solved.

In another article featured on April 22, 2010 at WorlDental.org: Dental Insurance Options and Dental Plan, they discuss the many dental coverage options and plans available for individuals and their families who need some form of coverage.
Depending on your income and needs, dental coverage can vary greatly – as addressed in the article (http://worldental.org/dental-insurance/dental-insurance-dental-plan-coverage/1282/).

But for the millions of people who cannot afford the high cost of dental insurance, and for those who do not have insurance provided by their employers, accessing affordable plans remains an issue.

Let’s face it, dentistry is expensive. People dread having to go to the dentist, especially if they do not have any form of coverage and they have to pay 100% out of pocket. Ouch!

According to most people, dental insurance seems the best option, but as the article points out, there set backs, as denoted in this quote:

“If you decide to opt for regular dental insurance, be prepared to deal with financial restrictions; these plans are often accompanied with a cap on the payments that will be covered by dental plan for the period of a year. The limits placed on dental insurance plans usually include a cap of $1200.00 to $1500.00.”

Discounted dental plans and voluntary programs received merit and bonus points for offering more benefits for less, as stated:

“Generally, a consumer can expect to pay as little as $80.00 every year to as much as $120.00 a year to participate in such dental plan program. The payment of enrollment fees gives individuals access to dentist that will offer dental treatments and procedures at discounted prices; discounts can range from as little as ten percent to as much as sixty percent.

What’s nice about this kind of option is that there are no yearly caps placed on dental plans and the consumer is not responsible for paying any deductibles before discounts can be taken advantage of. What’s more, this type of dental plan can get the consumer discounts on cosmetic dentistry or complex dental procedures whereas such treatments are often not covered with traditional dental insurance coverage.”

American Dental Plan (ADP) is a great option for the entire family. Unlike insurance, there are no waiting periods, no restriction and no limits to coverage. In addition, ADP is a great program to fill the gaps and subsidize insurance.
Our dental plan covers you if you are:

Self employed
Unemployed
Part time or seasonal employee
Retired
Student
Small business owner
Full time employee with gaps in coverage
Contractor
Needing more dental services than your insurance will pay
Wanting to save $$ on all your dental needs
You can join American Dental Plan now
and start saving TODAY!
Even if you have dental insurance, you can use American Dental Plan for any services not covered by your insurance program. Visit our FAQ section for more info.

American Dental Plan has been in business since 1978 and is Arizona's oldest voluntary dental benefit plan. With approximately 650 participating dental providers, and priced at only $59 per year, why pay more for any other discount plan? No other competing plan can offer you more services, more providers, more business experience or more value for less money.

Ten Tips to Optimize Dental Health … It Takes More than Brushing and Flossing

Brushing and flossing are very important to your daily dental routine. If you do both as a part of your daily regiment, you increase your dental hygiene and decrease chances of decay and gum disease. Here are some other factors and tips that will help you keep your teeth and a healthy smile for a lifetime.

1. Do not let affordability or fear keep you from the dentist’s chair. Many people do not visit the dentist for two reasons: because they think it will cost too much and because they think it will be painful. True. Visiting the dentists office can be costly and painful, but only more so if people ignore their dental health. American Dental Plan is the most affordable discount network program and alternative to dental insurance. Membership includes a free annual exam and four x-rays, which covers the cost of membership. Do not ignore the dentist or your teeth. Your dental health is a key factor to your overall health.

2. Be aware of oral issues and dental needs. Your oral health includes a proper diet, which dictates many other things, such as: production of saliva, acidity, and cavities caused by too much sugar. What you put in your mouth impacts your teeth and your health. In addition, medications, pregnancy illness and disease can influence changes in your body and dental health. Ask your doctor how your afflictions or prescriptions will affect your teeth and gums.

3. Commit to a daily oral health routine, which includes brushing and flossing.
Talk to your dentist or dental hygienist about your oral health practices. Based on the discussion, come up with an effective routine. It should be easy to remember and follow. You may want to add fluoride rinse or whitening products to your routine. Ask your dentist or hygienist about their treatments and to recommend products.

4. Fluoride products are not just for kids. Fluoride can be an added benefit for all, not just children. Although fluoride helps strengthen their teeth as they grow and develop, but it also helps prevent decay for all age groups. Toothpastes and mouthwashes contain fluoride, but your dentist can also prescribe a stronger concentration of fluoride in a gel, toothpaste or rinse.

5. Brush, Floss, Repeat. It is a good habit to brush twice a day – even better to brush after every meal. In addition, you should floss at least once a day, because it helps remove plaque, which is vital to your dental health. Plaque is the bacteria that forms on your teeth and if it is not removed often, it builds up and can cause gingivitis, periodontal disease and decay.

6. Limit sugary snacks and beverages high in fructose corn syrup. It is wise to eat healthy to stay healthy. Foods high in sugars and starches provide more fuel for bacteria, plaque and decay. Reduce your intake of sugary foods and beverages, and brush after consumption.

7. Daily vitamin and mineral supplements help keep teeth nourished. A balanced diet is very important. Sometimes life gets hectic and we eat poorly and do not get enough nourishment. Taking daily supplements can offset imbalances and boost your health and well-being. Look for a quality vitamin and mineral supplement that has plenty of Calcium, and vitamins K and D.

8. Smoking and tobacco consumption are bad for your oral health.
Smoking or using chewing tobacco increases your risk of oral cancer, gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth decay. Using tobacco also contributes to bad breath and stains on your teeth. Talk to your doctor and dentist about risks and ways to quit the habit. Regular examinations are particularly important for tobacco users who are at increased risk of developing lesions and growths.

9. It is your mouth, you should know what’s inside. Even if you visit your dentist on a regular basis, examine your mouth and look for changes that might be of concern, such as: swollen gums, dark discoloration on teeth and gums, chips in teeth, and sores or lesions on gums, cheeks and tongue.

10. Don’t delay on decay … visit the dental office, regularly. Talk to your dentist about how often you should visit, based upon your individual oral health and plaque production. If you have a history of cavities or crown and bridge work, or are wearing braces, you should visit the dentist more often. Diabetics and smokers should visit the dentist more often in addition to people with suppressed immune systems.

Dental Health Determines Smiles and Frowns

Every New Year, I make the same resolution: to smile more. It’s a simple resolution. If I am smiling more, it means I have something to smile about and that I am healthy and confident – two things that really matter in life.

You know how they say “a picture is worth a thousand words?” Well I came up with a new saying “your dental health is worth a thousand smiles.” Being in the industry for so many years, you notice people’s smiles and whether they have had good dental care. It is when they do not smile that you assume the opposite and that they have not had good care or taken good care of their smiles.

However, here are some facts that impact our smiles:
• In a survey published last year, nearly 89 percent of consumers receive regular dental care, with the majority seeing their dentist twice a year or more. Sixty percent have dental benefits, while the other 29 percent pay out of pocket for the care they need. This means six million at-risk consumers defer the dental care they need. (These findings were revealed in a survey of consumers age 25 and older by the Long Group for the not-for-profit Delta Dental Plans Association).
• In 2008 and 2009, many people lost their jobs and their benefits due to the economic crisis and benefit cuts. Corporate budget cuts, healthcare reform and job losses have pulled the teeth out of dental benefits and offerings and may place certain mandates on dental health coverage. According to Employee Benefit News and Employee Benefit Advisor, Dental benefits, remain one of the most valued and important benefits an employer can offer – aside from health insurance.

More than likely, we will continue to see benefit options shrink in the corporate arena, as companies struggle to survive and stay in the game. Interestingly, this economic crisis has delivered a big message to many Americans who lost their homes, jobs, benefit offerings and money in the market. Here is the take away: Your health and well-being, financially and otherwise, are in your control. Your smile depends on you.

Here is something to smile about:
• It is never too late to turn your frown upside-down and get the affordable dental care you need to brighten or straighten your smile.
• It was denoted in a recent article in Employee Benefit News that stand-alone dental companies and providers have more experience designing and administering cost-efficient dental and vision plans, where medical carriers specialize in adjudicating and paying medical claims based on policies, systems and processes unique to the practice of medicine. Many of these insurers lack the experience and infrastructure to do the same for dental benefits – and they charge more. Check out our plans: www.arizdental.com.
• By purchasing a yearly membership, you gain access to a network of participating dental offices that provide the same quality dental services but at affordable and predictable prices. This dental plan is unique since there are no waiting periods, no claim forms, no pre-existing exclusions, no yearly maximums, no employment requirements or age restrictions. While unemployment continues to increase in Arizona, many families are faced with the decision on how to afford continued dental care after losing their job and their dental benefits. American Dental Plan, Arizona’s oldest voluntary dental benefit plan, is a viable solution for both employers and employees, whether full time, part time, seasonal or recently laid off or terminated.

When job security and health benefits are in question, it is a good idea for employees to assume their own responsibility for continued benefits and consider voluntary benefit programs as a pro-active alternative. This will ensure continuation of benefits in the event of job loss or a reduction of benefits from the employer.

One of the features of joining American Dental Plan is that billing and ID cards are sent directly to the employee’s residence instead of being handled through Human Resources. This also helps in the continuation of benefits regardless of employment status or retirement.

Membership in American Dental Plan starts at only $59 per year for individuals, and families can join for $99 per year. The dental plan provides one exam and 4 x-rays, per person per membership year, for no charge with savings up to 40% on cleanings, fillings, extractions, crowns, braces, implants and more! Members can select from our provider network of over 650 participating dentists through Arizona, including Specialists.

This dental plan is unique since there are no waiting periods, no claim forms, no deductibles or employment or age requirements. American Dental Plan has helped tens of thousands of Arizona families save hundreds of dollars every year on their dental care needs since 1978.

For complete information including the most recent fee schedule, list of participating dentists and an enrollment form, visit www.arizdental.com or contact Customer Service at American Dental Plan at (602) 265-6677. Follow us on twitter at http://twitter.com/arizdental.

We look forward to helping more Arizonans afford voluntary dental benefits.

To your health.
